Ubuntu 13.04 Named ‘Raring Ringtail’

Ubuntu 13.04 has been given its codename by Ubuntu founder mark Shuttleworth. And despite many excellent community guesses – thought most we saw seemed to involve the words ‘rabid’ and ‘rabbit’ (!) – 13.04 is nicknamed the ‘Raring Ringtail’. Why ‘Raring Ringtail’? Mark explains: “[In the next six months] we want to have the phone, tablet and TV all lined up. So I think it’s time to look at the core of Ubuntu and review it through a mobile lens: let’s measure our core platform by mobile metrics, things like battery life, number of running processes, memory footprint, and polish the rough edges that we find when we do that. The tighter we can get the core, the better we will do on laptops and the cloud, too.” Raring means ‘full of enthusiasm or eagerness’, so will 13.04 finally sport a more nimble feel? As for ‘Ringtail‘, I’m yet to discover precisely (ho ho) what that is… Update: Mark Shuttleworth has confirmed that the mascot is a Ringtail Racoon (which confusingly is also known as the Ringtail Cat).
