How to add a Live Wallpaper on Ubuntu

Desktop looking drab? Spice it up with an animated background.

Live Wallpapers aren’t anything new in Linux, but LiveWallpaper, a relatively new app, is perhaps the easiest to use of them all.
So far only 2 ‘themes’ are included, both of which are re-makes of popular Android live wallpapers.

Drawbacks

As fancy as LiveWallpaper is there are drawbacks to using it.
Firstly, it’s not stable, and only a daily-build PPA is available to install from. So expect bugs.
Secondly, as mentioned in the video above, it will cause an impact on overall system performance. If you’ve got an i7 quad-core processor then this will be minimal. But if you’re on a laptop you’ll want to be cautious about running it.
Finally, when Live Wallpaper is running you won’t be able to access or add any links or folders placed on there.

How to Intall Live Wallpaper in Ubuntu 12.04 & 12.10

Determined to try it out? I though you might. You’ll need to add the following third-party PPA to your Software Sources.
Remember than PPAs can be set up by anyone, so you’re installing this at your own risk.
  • sudo add-apt-repository ppa:fyrmir/livewallpaper-daily
  • sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install livewallpaper livewallpaper-config livewallpaper-indicator
Once installed open the Dash and launch ‘Live Wallpaper Config’ to begin tweaking away.
