How To Install Steam on Ubuntu

Steam is a multiplayer platform for distributing games online developed by Valve Corporation. The application runs mainly on Windows operating systems, but there are some ways for running it under Linux distributions.

In this tutorial we will show you two methods for installing Steam under a system running Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot or Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narhwal. We will see how to install Steam using Wineand PlayOnLinux.

1. Installing Steam With Wine

Install first Wine 1.3 with these commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install wine1.3

Then install Steam with this command:

winetricks steam

Then follow setup instructions:








You can then start Steam from its desktop shortcut or search in the Unity Dash.

2. Installing Steam With  PlayOnLinux

Install PlayOnLinux as described here, then launch it and bring up the Install window and search for Steam in the Gamescategory and install it:



Once installed, you can run it from PlayOnLinux's main window:
